Description

NGC 4696 & 4709 are elliptical galaxies located in the constellation Centaurus and NGC 4696 is dominant galaxy in the cluster shown in this image.
It is considered to be a member of the Centaurus Cluster and is the dominant member of a small group of galaxies known as "Cen 45" which is currently merging with the main Centaurus Cluster (Cen 30) .

NGC 4696 is about 145,000,000 lights away and is the brightest galaxy in the Centaurus Cluster. Apparent magnitude sis 11.4 and Apparent size is 4'.5 × 3'.2.

NGC 4709 was discovered by astronomer James Dunlop on May 7, 1826.
